Umm ... I actually think that this is probably pretty good place to jump in if you've never read the 'verse, because Dean is trying to piece things together throughout the story himself, but it, of course, makes more sense in the context of what's already been revealed in the 'verse.
As to the question of darkfic, I'm probably the worst person to ask, but there isn't a lot of direct violence, though the dub-con is very dubious.
