You seem to really like disliking Sam. ;-) He's ... something ... here, but it's complicated, so I'm glad you could see some layers.

And as for "shouldered" versus "soldiered", I know what you mean, but even after looking it over again with both terms, I really do mean "shouldered" there, as in "to push with or as if with the shoulder, esp. roughly." I feel like "shouldered" gets at the sense of pushing against something, pushing forward, in a way that "soldiered" doesn't (for me, at least), probably because it lacks clear connection to physicality. The verb phrase "soldier on" implies a way of being (more akin to being steadfast, determined) whereas the verb "shoulder" implies a way of doing (more akin to doing something with force).
