Fanfic - SPN: Elves and Names and Gifts and Trees (Sam, Dean)
Title: Elves and Names and Gifts and Trees
Author:
eboniorchid
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester
Prompt: 092. Surprised. For
100moods, challenge table here. Inspired by the pic prompt for Nov. 10 at
mini_nanowrimo.
Word Count: 598 words exactly.
Rating: G
Warnings/Spoilers: Gen. Pseudo-crack. Faux-plot. Potential vague spoilers for Season 1 generally.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. Really. Nothing.
Summary: Sam and Dean meet a very insightful elf.
Author's Notes: This is immensely wholesome and completely random! Apparently my muse needed a break from dark/angst/apocalypse/smut fic. So, here goes.
"We're in an enchanted forest?! You gotta be kidding me, here, Sammy."
"Dean, what kind of crazy joke would that be? So, there's this enchanted forest, right? And it's, ya know, enchanted and-"
"Okay, I get it. And you're never allowed to tell jokes, ever again. But seriously … what are we supposed to do with an enchanted forest?"
"Nothing, young one." A young woman emerged from behind a nearby tree. Her skin was bronze and seemed almost to carry a sprinkling of golden glitter. And her ears? Her ears were turned up with a point, in a mythically elven manner.
"Um, you seem pretty young yourself there … miss."
"My name is Eldora." She brushed a hand over her skin, which suddenly seemed to glow. "It means golden. And you are?"
"Umm, John Panazzo, and this is my brother, Chuck." Dean couldn't help the lie. It was kind of a habit at this point.
Eldora laughed and laughed like tinkling bells on flying reindeer reigns.
"I am not here to judge you, young one. You would not be here if we did not wish it so. Who are you truly?"
Sam leaned in a bit, getting the elf's attention.
"I'm Sam and this is Dean."
"The deity and the diplomat, how fitting … and amusing."
Eldora was all smiles and Sam found himself smiling right back, although he wasn't entirely sure why. Even Dean's mood seemed a little lighter with his lips turned up enough to make the skin around eyes crinkle.
"Uh … well … I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm glad you find us so entertaining."
"You really do not know?" She looked from one brother to the other, still smiling, but more in confused wonder now. "Your people do not name you for your gifts? But they have, have they not?"
"Name us … for our gifts?" Sam was trying his best to translate her highly formal speech while also trying to bridge the obvious cultural gap. "The deity … and the diplomat. You mean, his name means leader and mine means …"
"Name of God."
"Right. So, I could see his … maybe … sometimes … but, uh …"
"Are not your gifts beyond the realms of your people?"
Sam was startled by her apparent knowledge of his powers and Dean, of course, being the diplomat, tried to cover up Sam's momentary fluster.
"Sam's just like the rest of us."
She looked again, moving her gaze between the two brothers, before settling her eyes on Dean.
"Why is there such fear in you? His strength is nothing more to fear than yours, young one. Your people need you both, and all your gifts, as we do now."
Dean chose to ignore the bit about him being afraid. Because it was so clearly, absolutely, not even remotely true. "You, uh, need us for what?"
"You are Hunters and we have a rogue elemental of your kind terrorizing the villages that we leave outside the veil. We need you to Hunt."
Sam looked at Dean, Dean looked at Sam, and they both did their patented head-tilt-and-shrug move, silently agreeing to check it out.
"We've looked into less."
"Oh yeah, way less."
Dean turned back to their new client, gesturing for her to lead the way.
As she glided in the direction of the setting sun, the Winchesters fell into step behind her, and Dean just couldn't help himself.
"So, you're an elf, right? Do you guys … like … live in trees?"
"Dean!"
"Dude, how often do we get to meet elves?!"

And I have this image of a Spn/LOTR xover where Dean totally hits on Galadriel.

My brain amazes me to, although usually in a bad way. Apparently sugar highs don't work so well for writing in my Evil!Sammy Universe. Because, yeah, it will probably never be posted, but before this little ditty got started, my brain had definitely begun work on a Supernatural Boyband (Popslash) AU that was even more drastically on crack!
And DUDE, Dean would totally hit on Galadriel! I didn't even realize how much I was channeling LOTR here. It's not really one of my fandoms, but I totally should have at least thought about it, I mean, since there were elves and everything, but I seriously didn't even think about LOTR elves.
Now I'm all, Sam/Dean/HotElvenArcherBoy (so Legolas) Hunting/Drinking 3some-ing ... *guh* Bloody hell, MJ, how do you always manage to make me think so far outside the box?

I really love the serenity that just kind of oozed from the elf - it was very much like the way I felt when reading about Galadriel for the first time. I also really like the genuine confusion on Sam and Dean's parts when she refers to them as the deity and the diplomat. I'd never thought of looking up their names, though now that I have, I must say they really fit them.
Very lovely story, m'dear!

I'm glad my elven lady worked for you! LOTR isn't really one of my fandoms, so I didn't even realize I was channeling Galadriel (although I can see it now). And yeah, I don't know if the shows creators knew they were doing that or if it just sort of happened, but, yeah, their names are intriguingly fitting.
Thank you muchly for the lovely feedback!
