Chapter 12: And Now It Is for Us to Do
[050.Hopeful]

Seven months and four days later, Sam did find Dean again, in Bobby's salvage yard, walking back to the garage to grab more tools for that Impala tune-up his dad had nagged him about not long before Sam and John had said their first hello.

He really wasn't trying to sneak up on Dean, but he didn't know where Bobby stood on the whole half-demon issue and he really didn't want to start this off with some kind of fight, especially because Sam knew he'd win. He'd come by Cloak, which would probably freak Dean out immensely, even if he didn't think Sam had ended up turning evil, but Sam really didn't know what Dean might be thinking right now, about his loyalties or even his right to continued existence.

He had to try, though, had to try to get Dean on board with the next big quest, the next epic Hunt. But he wasn't fooling even himself about his other motives for being here. He wanted Dean on board with other things too, with him, with them. And he hoped that his months spent searching for answers hadn't made him too late for that, too late to really be with Dean, in the way Dean had wanted them to be, on the night that Sam had left.

"Dean."

Dean turned swiftly, gun whipped out, safety off, and aimed square at Sam's heart. Sam could have stopped him, but he didn't. This wasn't about that. He'd prefer to live, yes, but he was pretty sure that Dean wouldn't shoot him on sight, so there wasn't any need to press his luck with Dean's trust of him by using his powers to keep Dean's weapon out of the way.

"Are we back to this again?"

Dean cocked his head to the side, brow furrowing. "Sam?"

"Yeah, Dean. I said I'd find you again, didn't I?"

Dean still seemed unsure of what to do, his gun arm held steady, but his jaw worked like he didn't know quite what to say.

"I'm not here to hurt you, Dean. And you can Christo at me if you like or start an exorcism or whatever. But I'm not possessed and I'm still just as human as ever."

Dean didn't move, didn't even seem to think about moving.

"Or … you could just shoot me and get this over with. You're a good Hunter, I'm sure you'd figure it all out eventually anyway. And I'm actually betting that your dad might already know."

"Know what?"

"About the others."

"The other whats?"

"The other kids like me."

"The Demon took more than just you?"

"No, he left the others with their human families."

"What? Then why'd he take you?"

"I had Hunter blood." He shrugged, his tone bitter. "Call it an experiment."

"What? Sam, Dad wasn't even a Hunter back then. You know that."

"Wasn't he? You've never wondered why you're a natural at this? Why it came so easy to fire a gun and hit a bullseye at age eight? Why you've thought about leaving this life so many times, but something always brings you back to it? Why dad could believe the supernatural reality so easily when ninety-nine percent of other people seeing the exact same thing would never let themselves believe it? It's in our blood, Dean, everything is. Hell, I should know. Even after years of reprogramming, in the end, I was still more Hunter than Demon, more Winchester than Grigori. You've never given any thought to all those military men and police officers, mercenaries and pioneers, stretching back through generations of this family? We're not new at this, Dean. We're not the first of our kind. We're part of a long line of Hunters, Dean … a long line of Hunters that have been at war with the Grigori for centuries, maybe millennia. They've been playing the long game, Dean, and they're going to win if we're not in this one hundred percent … one hundred percent and united."

Dean's eyes flicked back and forth, looking deep into Sam's, and when he finally seemed satisfied, he lowered his gun. "Okay. So say all that's true, and I'm not saying it is, but if it were true, what would it have to do with the other kids like you?"

"We need to find them, Dean. That's the next big Hunt. We need to find them. All of them. And show them that they don't have to give in to the darkness … … that they can be better than that."

It wasn't a declaration of love despite the rough uncertainty of their parting. It wasn't an apology for leaving all those months ago, for never saying a word, for never even checking in to see if John and Dean had actually made it out okay. It wasn't even just a thank you for pulling him back from the brink. But Sam knew he meant all of that, and more. And when Dean stilled, his eye's searching Sam's again, some emotion flashed across his face, maybe relief, maybe acceptance, maybe even contentment, and he nodded slowly, as serious and final as any "I do."

Then he took a deep breath, mood officially lightened with the rise of his eyebrows and the pout of his lips.

"So … Sammy … where do we start?"

Thank you very much! Yeah, the Sam/Kane dynamic was rough, but Sam got to slay some dragons in the end anyway. Dean, yeah, finally getting up the nerve to stand up for himself and Sammy. I'm so glad you like it!

And about that sequel, I'm not sure if there will be a proper sequel exactly, but I know I have tons more ideas for stories in this universe, so I'm sure you'll be seeing more from these boys!

Great story, it's unusual to read stories completely from Sam POV.

I hated Kane and would liked to have seen Sam kill him in the last chapter, but everything else just worked so well together.

You did leave the ending looking like the start of a new story with Sam and Dean looking for the children like Sam, maybe you could get Sam to kill Kane in that (maybe after Kane hurting Dean).

Looking forward to more in this verse.

Thank you!

I hadn't realized Sam POV stories were rare. Good to know, though.

You hated Kane? Yay! *cough* I mean, I love to hate Kane, so I'm glad that hate was transferred to the reader.

And yeah, there's bound to be more about Sam and Dean and their adventures after this, maybe even some stories that glimpse into their earlier times too. I definitely think the Sam/Kane dynamic will need a good number of stories (maybe another big multi-chapter), but I definitely intend to deal with that and, yeah, Sam's pretty bent on his destruction so ... Kane Beware!

Thanks for reading and for leaving the great feedback!

I've been reading this on and off through the day, and finally got to the end. Nice story, I really enjoyed it. I especially liked how you managed to parallel this universe with the one we know. :)

I'm commenting on the entire 12 chapters. I really enjoyed the story, and that no one's hands were clean. Poor Sam, stuck between John and the Demon, and making a great choice. I am so glad that Sam and Dean wound up together. This season has been soul wrenching, I love it when the fanfics give me hope!

I finally finished! Great job. The confrontation scene was a terrific play on canon, and intensely emotional.

I really like some of the theories you espoused and this is really an intriguing universe, so I'm glad you plan to play in it some more. I'll definitely be looking forward to more stories.

Thank you so much! It's great to hear that the confrontation with its twisted canon bits had an emotional impact!

I'm glad you like some of my theoretical meanderings and the 'verse itself, even enough to read some more. XD

Thanks for the awesome feedback!

I enjoyed this so much , but I can't help thinking that this is a 'verse waiting to happen isn't it? *nods head* I'm so going to keep my eye out for future stories. One question though, was this posted somewhere else a long time ago? I was definitely experiencing deja vu while reading it.

Date: 2007-12-15 05:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] writingbyebonio.livejournal.com
Thanks. And yes, it is rather a 'verse in limbo a bit, that's undeniable. As for it being posted a while ago, if you check the dates, you'll see that it was first put up a year ago, so maybe you read it then?
